Faith Milestones

So many important faith milestones, including Baptism and Communion, happen during the childhood years. The parents, caregivers, and congregation surrounding these children have a wonderful and serious responsibility. Living in the baptismal covenant means proclaiming to children the Good News of God’s abundant love. This love is manifested in Baptism and Communion, and it is revealed in God’s Word, the Lord’s Prayer, the Ten Commandments, the Creed, and ultimately in our daily life.
St. Paul Lutheran Church seeks to partner with families through education and a supportive community. We provide instruction for children to help them feel comfortable, ready, and at ease as they approach the mystery of God’s presence in the sacraments and other faith milestones.

Milestone: Baptism
Baptism is entrance into the community of God’s people—the birth into a great family. Baptism initiates a lifelong journey that shapes every aspect of our lives and gives meaning to every moment.

Milestone: Entrance into Sunday School
On Rally Sunday, three year old children are invited to begin attending Sunday School.  Sunday School continues through the sixth grade.

Milestone: Presentation of First Bible
Third graders are presented with a Bible on Rally Sunday during worship.

Milestone: Communion
Communion is a renewing and nourishing milestone in the life of a Christian individual and world community. Through communion we are strengthened for service by God’s abiding love, receive God’s forgiveness, and share in the abundance of living in this great Christian family. Firth graders receive several weeks of instruction in preparation for their First Communion.  They receive their First Communion on the first Sunday in October.

Milestone: Confirmation
Confirmation is a program for 7th and 8th grade students.  It consists of Confirmation classes on Wednesdays from 4:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m., Sunday School, and worship attendance.  Confirmation is held in the fall of 9th grade on the second Sunday of October.

Milestone:  Graduation from High School
Graduating High School seniors are recognized during worship on the Sunday of Postville High School graduation in May.
